What Is GEO? How to Get Cited by AI Search

A prospective customer no longer types "companies doing ERP integration in Istanbul". They ask an AI assistant instead, and get a single answer. That answer names three firms.
The question is: is yours one of them?
This article looks at that shift in search behaviour and at the concrete ways to prepare for it. The name for this work is GEO.
What is GEO, and is it replacing SEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the work of getting cited as a source inside AI-generated answers. ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot — all of these give the user an answer rather than a list.
The same idea used to be called AEO (answer engine optimization); GEO is the name in common use today.
The crucial point: GEO does not replace SEO, it sits on top of it. Most of these assistants still assemble their answers from the web. A site that cannot be crawled, loads slowly or has broken structure is invisible to AI too. The difference is in the goal:
- In SEO, the goal is to rank high in a list of results. The measure is clicks.
- In GEO, the goal is for your name to appear inside the answer. The measure is often visibility with no click at all.
That second point brings an uncomfortable truth: a user may benefit from your content and never visit your site. On the other hand, being one of three firms named in the answer is worth far more than being the tenth link.
Why is this an opportunity for small sites?
In classic search, domain authority weighs heavily; a new site struggles to overtake an established one. In generative engines the picture shifts somewhat: when the answer is assembled, how clear and well-evidenced a passage is can matter more than how large the site is.
That is good news for a small business with genuine depth in a narrow area. A page that answers one question thoroughly gets quoted more readily than a generic "we do everything" page.

How to prepare your site for AI search
None of the following is magic; most of it is simply what a good website already does.
1. Make the question the heading and the answer the first paragraph. This is exactly what an assistant looks for when assembling a response: a two-sentence definition directly under a "What is GEO?" heading. Text that delivers its answer three paragraphs later does not get quoted. It is also better writing for human readers.
2. Put your frequently asked questions on the page. Real questions, visible on the page, with short answers. They create extra surface in search results and give assistants ready-made pieces to use. One rule: a question in the schema must also be visible on the page.
3. Add structured data. Schemas such as Organization, Article, FAQPage and Breadcrumb tell a machine plainly what your page is. Correct markup lowers the chance of your content being misread.
4. Evidence your claims. Dates, sources, numbers, examples. "The best solution" is useless to any engine; "a regulation dated X requires Y" is not. Invented statistics are the fastest way to lose trust.
5. Make your identity unambiguous. Your company name, what you do, where you are and how to reach you should appear consistently across the site. AI systems recognise an entity partly through consistency across sources; spelling your name the same way everywhere is a small but real advantage.

7. Turn a topic into a cluster. Several focused, interlinked pages work better than one very long one. Internal links take both readers and crawling systems through the whole subject.
8. Keep content fresh. Generative engines are sensitive to recency. A page written a year ago and untouched since falls behind one updated this month on the same question. Reviewing dates, figures and regulatory references once a year and refreshing the update date is often more profitable than producing new content.
What these points have in common is telling: none of them is a trick for fooling an AI. Every one is a writing or structural decision that also serves a human reader better. That is not a coincidence — these systems are ultimately trying to imitate what people find useful.
Do you need llms.txt?
Short answer: harmless to add, but not a priority.
llms.txt is a proposed convention for offering AI models a simplified map of your content. It is not an official standard and the major providers do not require it. Treat content claiming it is "now essential" with caution.
The order that actually matters is: crawlability first, then clear answers, then structured data. llms.txt comes last, and it is optional.
How do you measure visibility?
There is no single definitive tool today. Use three sources together:
Search Console. Impression and click trends. Impressions rising while clicks stay flat can indicate that more answers are being given on the results page itself.
Referrers in analytics. Visits from AI tools appear as a separate source. The numbers may be small, but the trend matters — and this traffic usually arrives with far more intent, because the visitor has already done the comparison and chose you. That makes what happens after arrival even more critical: if your conversion rate optimization is weak, the visibility you won is lost at the door.
Manual testing. The most practical method: ask the assistants your own target questions and record in a table whether your name comes up. Repeat monthly. That simple table gives a clearer picture than most paid tools.
What not to do
Three common mistakes.
Piling up unreviewed, AI-written content. Multiplying low-quality pages does not buy visibility; it erodes trust. Using invented numbers. A statistic with no source misleads both your reader and the system that might cite you. The principle from our piece on data quality applies here too: a number without a basis is not a number.
Only talking about your brand. "Who we are" pages do not get quoted. What gets quoted is a paragraph that answers a question.
Where to start
Three steps. First, write down the ten questions your customers actually ask — the ones that recur in sales calls and support conversations are the best source. Second, place a clear, short, evidenced answer to each of them on your site. Third, ask the assistants those same questions and record today's baseline; you cannot improve what you do not measure.
